Alienware 14 review: portable gaming laptop that delivers on style and performance Read more:

The Alienware brand dominates gaming laptops, but the latest addition to Dell's range isn't the huge, brash notebook you'd expect – it's got a 14in screen, and it looks fantastic. See: The 7 best gaming laptops of 2013.
Dell has done sterling work to temper the immature excesses of older models – the flamboyant styling has been calmed down, and the Alienware 14 looks like it's grown up. The matt aluminium throughout is fantastic, and the slanted lines and angles are subtly stylish. Logos still light up, the keyboard is modestly backlit, and there's a thin band of light around the 14's base, but it doesn't feel ostentatious. See also: Alienware M14x review.
Build quality is great: there's no weakness across the wrist-rest, and minimal flex in the screen. The sturdy design comes at a price, and that's size: at 42mm thick and 2.8kg, the Alienware is as bulky as three Ultrabooks – and not far off some 17in-screened rivals.
The quad-core i7-4700MQ runs at 2.4GHz and is bolstered by a 3.4GHz Turbo pace. It returned a PCMark 7 score of 6,044 points, which places it among the fastest laptops: the 17in MSI GS70 scored 6060 points, and the Alienware 17 – which has a Core i7-4800MQ processor – managed 6332 points.
The nVidia GTX 765M with 2GB VRAM ran through our 1280 x 720 Medium-quality Crysis benchmark at an average of 121fps: excellent, even if it's ten frames slower than the Alienware 17.
At full-HD and Stalker's Ultra settings the smaller Alienware averaged a good 77fps. It can handle other games too – it averaged 30fps at Crysis and Battlefield 3's toughest settings and full-HD. Once again, though, the larger Alienware proved better: in that Stalker test it averaged 120fps.
The storage star is the 256GB LiteOn mSATA SSD. Its sequential read and write times of 467MB/s and 399MB/s are good, and the machine booted in less than 10 seconds.
Heat and noise are issues. The processor's top temperature of 100°C is the chip's thermal limit, and the fans inside whirred loudly when the machine was stress-tested – and the fans even spun up occasionally when the Alienware idled. You'll need to use the 14's audio kit to drown the noise out.
Thankfully, the speakers are more than capable. They're loud, with decent bass levels and a chunky mid-range – attributes that make games suitably explosive. There's little to shout about in the high-end, though, which is a little tinny.
Battery life was reasonable. The Alienware lasted for 4 hours and 29 minutes in our test – a quarter of an hour more than the larger Alienware, and an hour longer than the MSI.
There's plenty to like about the IPS panel. The matte finish banishes reflections that hamper gaming, and it's matched with a high resolution – our model has been upgraded with a full-HD screen. Quality is high: the measured brightness level of 325cd/m2 ensures punchy images, and a reasonable black level of 0.29cd/m2 lends games and movies real depth. The contrast ratio and viewing angles are both good, although the matte layer adds more grain than we'd like.
Dell eschews chiclet keys for a traditional keyboard, which works well: plenty of travel, a solid base, and snappy typing. The trackpad is grippy and large, and lights up when touched – but, as with most gaming laptops, we'd prefer a mouse.
The final touch comes from Alienware's bespoke software. The most interesting app allows the colours of ten different lights across the machine to be changed, with different options for different power states. Elsewhere, there are tools to update the machine, alter touchpad functionality and establish application routines for different games, and monitor performance.
Got to the next page to see our original hands-on review of Dell's Alienware 14 laptop, written by Chris Martin.

Electronics giant Sony enters 3D laptop market using Bravia TV technology

Electronics giant Sony has entered the 3D laptop market, unveiling the latest in its line of Vaio F Series computers.

The impressive piece of kit, expected to retail for around £1,800, makes Sony the latest in the number of manufacturers to push the 3D market.

Just as with Sony Bravia's 3D TVs, users will need 'Active Shutter' glasses in order to see images in 3D.The new laptops will use Intel core processors and users will also be able to watch 2D on the 16in screen at the flick of a switch.

They should be on sale by the end of this month and Sony hopes to be able to challenge Apple which will update its range later this week.

Industry insiders have said, however, that Apple is not going to make use of 3D technology.

The Vaio F is being seen as Sony's flagship entertainment model with a discrete graphics engine.Sony said that, 'in contrast with passive polarised 3D screens, the Vaio F Series uses advanced frame sequential panel technology and LED backlit control.

'This sophisticated technique ensures sharper, brighter images with a super-fast response time and wide viewing angle.

'Frame Sequential technology alternately displays Full HD (1920 x 1080) 3D images for left and right eyes at up to an extra-smooth 240fps frame refresh rate.

'From action movies to sports, games and more, you'll be rewarded with a more relaxed 3D experience, even after extended viewing periods.'

Galaxy S4 review: Samsung’s superphone

Samsung Galaxy S IV

The Samsung Galaxy S4 is the best phone Samsung have ever made. But can it stand up to the iPhone 5 and the HTC One? Matt Warman says yes.Just nine months ago, Samsung released the Galaxy S3 – it was the first phone to really claim that it could rival Apple’s iPhone. With the S4, now Samsung hopes to say it has overtaken its rivals.

The Korean giant is certainly throwing everything at it: the S4 is so packed full of new features that some have said it forms an incoherent mass rather than a unified product. There’s a 13MP camera and a 5” screen packed into a smaller, lighter, thinner body than the S3, and there’s new eye-tracking technology that simply means you have to tilt your head to scroll on the screen. It’s not perfect but it works. Hovering your finger above a photo or email lets you preview more of it, which works rather more consistently. And there are health features that track how far you’ve walked, a built-in remote control and a deal to print out your photographs. Just in case you feel the need, you can now even take pictures with both the front and the rear cameras at the same time.

So does the S4 feel like the ultimate superphone or like a flabby mess? Is Samsung trying to do everything and succeeding at nothing?

Facebook 'working on phone with HTC'

Facebook, which urgently needs to find a way to make money from its growing number of mobile phone visitors, has already hired former Apple employees who are believed to be working with HTC on the new project.
The news comes as Facebook is due to announce its first financial results since its troubled flotation on the US stock market. Shares traded in the company on the German stock exchange fell €1.28 to €22.50 in anticipation today, as Facebook gaming firm Zynga announced disappointing results of its own. Facebook shares in New York are down by approximately a quarter compared to its May 17 flotation price.
The social network is widely expected to announce it now has more than a billion users during its earnings call, but more than half of them access the site via mobile, and founder Mark Zuckerberg has identified the transition to mobile usage as his “greatest challenge”. None of the $3.15 billion in advertising sales last year came from advertising on phones.
Building its own device could allow the site to collect revenue from its existing advertisers more effectively by making sure their commercial content was distributed throughout the phone’s different functions.
HTC has already produced the first phones to feature a dedicated Facebook button, and is looking for a way to differentiate its products from those of rival manufacturer Samsung. Its flagship One X device has been dogged by bans on US sales following a patent dispute with Apple. Shares in HTC have dropped 43 per cent this year after it reported three consecutive quarters of profit decline.

Samsung Galaxy Camera Android snapper on sale this week

The first 3G camera hits shops this week. The Android-powered Samsung Galaxy Camera is on sale on 7 November -- this Wednesday evening -- for the wallet-lightening price of £399.

Unveiled in August, the plainly named Samsung Galaxy Camera goes on sale at Samsung stores at 5pm on Wednesday. Then it's on sale at other shops from Thursday, including camera shops such as Jessop's and the phone-focused likes of Carphone Warehouse and Phones4U. Prices at these stores may vary.

The quad-core camera runs Google's Android software for mobile phones and tablets, which means you control it by tapping and swiping on the screen, just like you do with your smart phone. It's based on the same home screens you fill with apps, downloaded over Wi-Fi from the Google Play app store.

Wi-Fi and 3G are built-in, so you can download apps, check your email and browse the Web, and send pictures too, uploading photos and videos to Facebook, Flickr, YouTube and more.

The software is the (almost) latest version of Android, 4.1 Jelly Bean. We're excited to see if the camera is updated quickly to the new version 4.2 of Jelly Bean, because 4.2 includes a very cool feature called Photo Sphere.

Photo Sphere doesn't just capture what's in front of the person holding the camera, it captures everything all around to create a 360-degree bubble, which you can move around in when you view the picture to see what was behind and above the camera too.

On the photography front, the Galaxy Camera has a 21x optical zoom lens and 16-megapixel rear-illuminated CMOS sensor. And it sports a massive 4.8-inch screen, the same size as the Samsung Galaxy S3 and dwarfing any other compact camera or dSLR screen.

So, read on further for a simplified comparison between these two technologies so that you can make a right choice in your journey of shopping for a perfect TV.As name suggests, LCD TVs are television sets that make use of Liquid Crystal Display technology to produce images. new apple iphone

Apple iPhone 5 is just 7.6 millimeters thin. To make that happen, Apple engineers had to think small, component by component. They created a nano-SIM card, which is 44 percent smaller than a micro-SIM. They also developed a unique cellular solution for iPhone 5. The conventional approach to building LTE into a world phone uses two chips — one for voice, one for data. On iPhone 5, both are on a single chip. The intelligent, reversible Lightning connector is 80 percent smaller than the 30-pin connector. The 8MP iSight camera has even more features — like panorama and dynamic low-light mode — yet it’s 20 percent smaller. And the new A6 chip is up to 2x faster than the A5 chip but 22 percent smaller. Even with so much inside, iPhone 5 is 20 percent lighter and 18 percent thinner than iPhone 4S.

Never before has this degree of fit and finish been applied to a phone. Take the glass inlays on the back of iPhone 5, for instance. During manufacturing, each iPhone 5 aluminum housing is photographed by two high-powered 29MP cameras. A machine then examines the images and compares them against 725 unique inlays to find the most precise match for every single iPhone.

Look at iPhone 5 and you can’t help but notice the exquisite chamfer surrounding the display. A crystalline diamond cuts this beveled edge. It’s what gives iPhone 5 its distinctive lines. Fitting for a phone so brilliant.
